Bridge to Breakwater Focused On Helping Families in Need

February 15, 2007 - Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southern California (RMHCSC) have joined ION® Fest and the ION® Bridge to Breakwater® race on the Los Angeles Waterfront to help make a difference in the lives of seriously ill children and their families.

Some children must travel long distances to receive medical attention, and treatment can take a year or longer. Their families are often forced to stay at costly hotels, causing financial strain on the family.

The RMHCSC serves as a temporary residence near the hospital where family members can enjoy a comfortable and supportive environment.

“For 30 years, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southern California has committed itself to assisting families by offering a “home away from home” during their child’s hospitalization and by creating a true camp experience for children,” said RHMCSC CEO Nicole Rubin.

"We are very pleased to be a beneficiary of this year's ION® Bridge to Breakwater race," continued Rubin.

Portions of the entry fee for those that sign up through the RMHCSC will be donated to the RHMCSC.

"All participants in the Labor Day Weekend race will also be able to donate directly to the RHMCSC and the numerous other non-profit organizations and charities affiliated with the ION® Bridge to
Breakwater® race," stated Dave Behar, Event Founder and Executive Director.

Likened to San Francisco's famous Bay to Breakers race, the unique 12K/5K races are held along the Los Angeles Harbor in San Pedro, starting at the Vincent Thomas Bridge, venturing along the Waterfront, around the Federal Breakwater at Cabrillo Beach and back to the Cruise Ship Promenade.

Races include Running, Walking, Inline Skating, Skateboarding, and a Bike Tour of the revitalizing Waterfront and downtown. A 1K "SPeedash" is also held for kids 10 and under.

About ION® Bridge to Breakwater®

Inspired by Los Angeles City officials and dozens of fellow San Pedro community members, the ION® Bridge to Breakwater® race is a "Celebration of LAbor" and "Active Participat.ion" – a homegrown, original, one-of-a-kind event series, founded by San Pedro's visionary native son, Dave Behar. Participants from all over the country include competitive and recreational athletes with prizes awarded to division winners, centipedes and those donning the most creative costumes.
